Denying Education

This video clip from CNN infuriates me.  I do not understand the mentality of denying education.  The school board here wanted to remove the book Freedom Writers Diary from a high school English teacher’s curriculum.  The teacher wouldn’t stand for removing this book from the classroom.  My philosophy is teach and discuss controversy, not deny and ignore.  Ignorance doesn’t allow for growth or knowledge.

Peace

This poem has been inspired by my very strong Aunt Laura who has sat by my Grandmother’s side for the last eight months as she battled for her health. Laura sat by her side and held Grandma’s hand as she took her last breath.

For remembering good times and hoping for peace for Aunt Laura and the family… farewell.

a Covet for Personal Solace

Here is a poem…I’m new to poetry, so forgive the primitive structure.  I’d love any suggestions for improvement.

This has been written after a period of violence against our students.  Seeing this turmoil in a young student’s life always forces me to think about the sadness that is nice to forget.

Teachers wanted: $125,000.00 per year

How much are you worth? Equity Charter School in New York believes that teachers are worth $125,000.00 per year. Ok, I read the NY Times article and thought, how can this be sustainable? Will this experiment work? The idea seems great. I can’t wait to hear about this school as it matures. This really lends itself to some interesting philosophical debates.
